What we are

RoomingFields is a booking platform for the Portuguese countryside. We list cabins, farm stays, eco retreats and country villas that we have visited in person — a short, honest collection rather than an endless catalogue. You book directly with the owner who keeps the place.

How we started

The company began in 2021 with six houses in Serra da Estrela and one spreadsheet. We had spent years borrowing keys from friends of friends to find places that never appeared on the big platforms, and it became obvious that the owners wanted the same thing we did: fewer, longer, better-matched bookings instead of a constant churn of one-night stays.

RoomingFields, Lda. was registered in Lisbon and we now work from an office on Rua das Flores with a team of four, plus regional scouts who live in the areas they cover — one in Gerês, one in the Alentejo and one who splits the year between the Douro and Serra da Estrela. The collection has grown to more than a hundred and twenty houses across six regions, which is roughly one for every eight we have visited.

How we choose places

Every property is visited before it joins us. We look for comfort and honesty — good beds, warm heating, a working kitchen — but also character and a real connection to the land around it. We turn down far more places than we list.

• A visit, unannounced where possible. We stay a night ourselves, or a scout does, before anything is written.
• A conversation with the owner. Who lives on site, who cleans, who answers the phone at nine on a Sunday evening.
• The practical file. Heating, hot water, internet speed measured in the room you would use it in, driving time and the state of the final approach road.
• A description written by us, not by the owner — and re-checked each season, with photographs of the actual house sent when you book.
• Removal when standards slip. Two unresolved complaints and a house leaves the collection.

Working with owners

We partner with families and small holdings, not chains. Owners set their own prices and house rules; we handle enquiries and guidance, and take a transparent commission only when a stay actually happens. There is no listing fee and no exclusivity: several of our owners also rent through their own websites, and we think that is healthy.

What a booking looks like

You send dates through the form; we check with the owner and reply within 24 hours with availability, the total price including any tourist tax or cleaning fee, and the payment schedule. Nothing is charged on this website and a request is not a reservation — a booking exists only once you have that confirmation in writing and have accepted it.

Unless your confirmation says otherwise, cancellation is free up to 14 days before check-in, half the deposit is refunded between 7 and 14 days, and inside 7 days the deposit is not refunded. Our approach to the environment

We favour stays that tread lightly: solar power, wood heat from managed forest, water reuse and local materials. We are honest about what "eco" means for each place, and would rather under-promise than greenwash — the questions we ask before a house joins that part of the collection are written up in the Journal.
